Cleaning Up the Streets

In the comic book Superhero world, garbage men would have super strength, with the ability to lift anything! Janitors would have super speed, so that they could get the job done ASAP! The garbage trucks are their "bat-mobiles" with infinite storage for smelly, gross things. With spray bottles pointed towards Justice, these heroes are often overlooked and forgotten. When we imagine heroes, "Cleaning Up the Streets", we see heroes knocking out villains left and right, not a normal guy in a uniform with a mop or riding on the back of a garbage truck. In America’s current society, one man’s trash is another man’s problem. People today leave their trash in the belief that it is not their job to throw away garbage, even their own. Living in a small town, most of us are lucky to have never seen the effects of a huge garbage strike. But I must ask you, what would happen if all janitors and garbage men stopped cleaning up your messes? One of the biggest and most unappreciated everyday superhero are custodian workers. If you still don't understand how these workers are heroes than picture this. The streets piling high with the stench of rotten garbage. Even your homes are overflowing with rotten pizza crust and moldy milk. When you go to the bathroom, you sit in millions of other people's feces, you can't see yourself in the mirror, and there's old barf for every square foot. The insanity of this disgusting world is impossible to truly grasp. Our world would be unlivable without these heroes to keep it clean. So how have you thanked them for their heroics? When was the last time you thanked your janitor for cleaning up your messes? When have you ever high-fived your garbage man and thanked him for keeping the city clean? Do you even know the names of the people who clean up your messes and garbage? Some of you may think: So what? That's their job! While it is their job to keep the workplace, city, school, or where ever they work clean, they are not being paid to be your personal maid or butler. Please don't think I'm trying to preach at you here, we've all done this before, even me. Some of us are worse than others. I'm telling you this so that we can all make a difference. Here are someways we can show appreciation towards these Everyday Superheroes: Write a thank you note--- While this seems overrated, writing a sincere note of thanks for all that these heroes do to make our lives clean is greatly appreciated. Buy them a gift--- It doesn't have to be anything huge, maybe just a Walmart gift card, some home baked goodies, or even a gift basket. Interact with them--- Say hello, ask their name, treat them like real human beings and not like your personal servants. Keep messes to a minimum--- Pick up after yourself after a meal, don't leave garbage all over the place, and don't leave a huge mess. It may seem crazy, but janitors and garbage men keep our world from ruin by doing a job that goes unrecognized. So go out and make a difference, thank these brave heroes for Cleaning Up the Streets and saving the world one trash bag at a time.

Up, Up, and Away!

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman! In this modern 21st century, everyone looks to the sky for a superhero to fly in and rescue them. While I do my fair share of comic book reading, superhero drooling, and action figure collecting, I know that these heroes are only a two dimensional fantasy. I joke that Green Lantern saved my life when I passed out at Six Flags, but I know that it was really a hard working, good citizen in a costume just trying to make a living. There are so many superheroes in our lives that we ignore as we walk with heads held towards the sky. We all want to live in a world where superheros come and accomplish impossible tasks and ask for nothing in return. Instead we live in something even better. A world where everyday people accomplish tasks we consider mediocre but we could not function without. “It’s the little things that count…” So why don’t we count them? By reading this blog I will take you on real life adventure that shows you, who the superheros really are in life even though nobody labels them to be. So let’s put down the comic books, turn off the movies and take the time to read about the real heroes in life. We can all afford to take the time to thank these people for saving the day and making our lives so much better, before they fly Up, Up and Away!
